An October 11, 2017 Local DVM.com article and video titled, Senator John Unger teaches high school students about leadership, civil discourse, describes a National Issues Forums Institute (NIFI) Deliberative Democracy Initiative that Senator Unger is leading with Berkeley County, West Virginia schools and Shepherd University. You can also read an October 29, 2017 article about Senator Unger's work, titled Local Students Engage in Study of Government, Deliberation, Debate, online in The Journal.

As Senator Unger describes the initiative:

These high school student leaders throughout the county will be convening deliberative forums using NIFI issue guides in their respective schools--first with all the high school students and then later with their communities. The hope is to establish this as part of the high school educational curriculum and school culture. We are looking at doing this in the middle schools and elementary schools in the near future.

Senator Unger is interested in hearing from others about similar initiatives at the county or district level.
