America is a country that has been called “the land of opportunitiesâ€. People from all over the world have moved to America so that they can live a better life and help support their families more. But what about the people and families that can’t afford to move to the United States and must remain in their troubled country? Should the United States give aid to struggling countries? I believe that the U.S. should definitely help those countries who are in need of help. In fact, I believe that every country should help anyone who is in need of assistance. Differences in politics shouldn’t matter as much and countries should be stripped down and recognized for the people and their rights. As human beings, we have an obligation to help each other. If no one helped anyone, then the human race would most likely be nonexistent by now.
The United States is commonly seen as a powerful, influential country. Some people believe that because of this, the U.S. has a responsibility of acting as peacekeepers and helping smaller countries. NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is an organization that the U.S. is a member of that was established for the purpose of protecting its members. “NATO’s essential purpose is to safeguard the freedom and security of its members through political and military means,†(NATO, . N.p.. Web. 7 Jan 2014). Other than the United States, some of NATO’s other members include countries like France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and Canada. In 2011, NATO ended one of it’s operations in Libya. Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, the strongman who had ruled Libya harshly for 42 years, had the Libyan people under threat and attack by using armed gangs in his command. “NATO took command of a significant force of dozens of ships and hundreds of airplanes and commenced military operations. NATO’s success was swift- saving tens of thousands of Libyan lives, grounding Qaddafi’s air forces, and watching Libya’s coast,†(Daalder, Ivo, and James Stavridis. "NATO's Success in Libya." Some people say that we shouldn’t get involved with countries or people in need because it isn’t our business, but how would you feel if the roles were reverse? If you were living in a country that was facing a huge problem and needed help, I’m sure you would hope and pray for something to help solve the problem. Also, what if you attached that statement to America getting involved in World War II, how would it look? How different would World War II have been if America never decided to get involved? Who would have won, who would have died, who would have lived, and how different would our world be? Maybe some of us, as individuals, would not even be alive today. America looked at the situation, decided that what Hitler was doing was wrong and against the human right to live, and decided that the problem needed to be solved. According the the various interviews I recorded, almost everyone who I talked to agreed that it is very important to help people who are less fortunate or in need. Many people agreed that organizations such as NATO, the UN, and the American Red Cross help aid and accomplish this tremendously.
In conclusion, I believe that America does have a responsibility for helping other countries. If the United States didn’t help anyone, how could we ever expect another country to help us if we face a hardship in the future? If we didn’t help anyone, we would not have any allies because other countries would get nothing out of it. How damaged would the world be if none of the countries helped each other? The disaster that recently happened in Fukushima, Japan that was caused by a massive earthquake would certainly not be better than it was when we tried to help. Perhaps we could have had even more nuclear leakage and in the end, it would have effected us all even more. I believe that America needs to help every struggling country and set the example that a person is a person and where they come from shouldn’t change the way we view their lives. In order for us all to coexist and work towards world peace together, we have to start helping each other, disregarding politics and come to the realization that we all have families and people we care about. We need to see people as individuals instead of numbers.
