The following information is from Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, and is a reminder about the upcoming Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement meeting that will be held June 2-4, 2016, in Indianapolis, Indiana. The meeting is being organized by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU)'s American Democracy Project, The Democracy Commitment, and NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in HIgher Education.

Attended by presidents, provosts, faculty, staff and students, this meeting is perfect for campus teams ready to prepare to apply or re-apply for the elective Carnegie Community Engagement Classification or to ensure that all students are prepared to be informed, engaged members of our campuses and communities.

  • Pre-conference workshops on assessment, non-partisan political engagement, and democratic dialogue and deliberation forums. 


  • CivEd Talks by three leading members of the civic engagement movement in higher education: 
    • Austin Belali, Director, Youth Engagement Fund;
    • Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg, Director of CIRCLE, Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service at Tufts University; and
    • David Hoffman, Assistant Director of Student Life for Civic Agency, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

  • Plenary session focused on talking across political and ideological differences to resolve challenging and controversial issues facing our democracy, using the State of Indiana's recent legislation surrounding LGBT rights and religious freedom protection featuring WNIT-TV's Politically Speakinghosted by Indiana State University South Bend political science professor Elizabeth Bennion. 


  • A tour of the original Democracy Plaza (DP) at the nearby Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus. 


  • Keynote session on the National Study on Student Learning Voting and Engagement with Nancy Thomas of the Institute for Higher Education and Democracy featuring panelists from the University of Houston-Downtown, the University of South Carolina-Upstate and other campuses.
