Teaching with National Issues Forums (NIF) Materials

Exploring Deliberation in the Classroom


Are you looking for new ways to engage students in productive, deliberative conversations in your classroom?

Are you interested in connecting with other teachers who are thinking about ways to instruct a new generation of citizens?

Have you used National Issues Forums materials to enrich instruction or teach about public issues?

Do you have ideas, suggestions, or experiences that could improve the use of NIF materials in the classroom?


If so, we invite you to explore the Teachers' Forum. You may start a conversation or continue a discussion related to teaching with National Issues Forums materials.


Related topics might include:

  • questions about deliberation and its use in classrooms;
  • reviews and comments about NIF materials and publications;
  • problems or concerns about using deliberation and problem solving;
  • connections between specific issues or deliberation in general and curriculum standards and educational goals;
  • strategies for using NIF materials with various academic subjects, such as English, civics, math, or science;
  • recommendations for readings or videos that help students connect to specific issues;
  • stories about the impact of forums and forum projects, from both teachers' and students' points of view; and
